Dog-Friendly Cellar Doors, Restaurants & Accommodation in the Hunter Valley: A Local's Guide

Dog-Friendly Cellar Doors, Restaurants & Accommodation in the Hunter Valley: A Local's Guide - Mercedes a Hunter Valley local since 1987.

Anyone who's tried to leave their dog behind for a Hunter Valley weekend knows that look. The one that follows you to the car and makes you feel like you have committed the ultimate betrayal.

The good news? You really don't have to choose. Our region has become one of Australia's most genuinely dog-welcoming destinations — cellar doors that roll out the red carpet, restaurants with sunny terraces made for lazy lunches and accommodation where your dog sleeps somewhere nicer than they do at home. Here's everything you need to plan your next doggo friendly visit.

Dog-Friendly Cellar Doors

Irongate Estate — Cnr Broke Road & McDonalds Road, Pokolbin

My personal favourite because you can experience both wine and food in the one beautiful location. Leashed dogs are welcome both inside and outside at the cellar door, and outside on the terrace when dining at the attached Irongate Kitchen. The wines are serious, the Basque tapas are outstanding, and the setting is quietly spectacular. Stay for lunch. Don't rush this one.

Gundog Estate — 101 McDonalds Road, Pokolbin

Surely the name says it all, a wine brand created to celebrate dogs. Both the verandah and deck area are perfect for a wine tasting with a four legged friend. They even sell dog friendly beer in their onsite Gourmet Pantry.

Glandore Estate Wines — Wilderness Road, Lovedale

Five resident wine dogs, doggy ice cream from Dogglicious, and a special tasting menu for your pup — including Chrapawnay and Pawraz. This one creates a memory you'll be talking about long after you've forgotten what you drank.

Pepper Tree Wines — Broke Road, Pokolbin

One of the most generous dog policies in the region — dogs welcome inside and outside, including the private tasting room. The gardens are among the prettiest in the valley, and a grazing picnic with a charcuterie board and blanket is a perfect slow afternoon with your dog by your side.

As a general rule: always call ahead to confirm dog policies, particularly on busy event weekends.

Dog-Friendly Restaurants & Cafés

Bistro Molines — McDonalds Road, Pokolbin

French provincial cuisine perched above the vineyards with sweeping valley views. Dogs are welcome on the outdoor terrace. Book ahead, request an outdoor table, and prepare to linger.

Café Enzo — Peppers Creek Village, Pokolbin

A Hunter Valley institution tucked into the Tuscan-style Peppers Creek Village. Dogs are welcome in the outdoor courtyard. If you're here on a Sunday morning with your dog and a coffee, you've made excellent life choices.

Dog-Friendly Accommodation

Villa Croissant — Pokolbin

Small non-shedding dogs under 10kg are welcomed in this beautifully appointed short-term rental in the heart of Pokolbin wine country. Minutes from everything on this list, and a lovely base for a proper Hunter Valley weekend. [Book via staynsip.com.au]

Spicers Guesthouse — Pokolbin

For those travelling in style, Spicers welcomes dogs in the King Deluxe rooms and The Cottage, with a Pooch Package that includes a dog bed and bowl. Beautiful surrounds, excellent restaurant, and a genuinely considered welcome for four-legged guests.

Wirral Grange — Lovedale

A three-bedroom cottage set right in the vines, welcoming well-behaved dogs at no extra charge. Fenced backyard, farm-fresh eggs, honey and wine on arrival. The kind of place that makes you want to slow right down.

Skip the Car Altogether

One of the loveliest things about travelling with a dog is that it naturally slows your day down — in the best way. Which is exactly why a private wine tasting at your accommodation is such a perfect fit. Our Stay n' Sip experience brings a hosted tasting of locally produced Hunter Valley wines directly to where you're staying. No loading the car, no leash negotiations, just great wine and a very happy dog. Learn more at staynsip.com.au

Quick Tips

  • Pack: Your own water bowl, waste bags, bedding and a long lead
  • Off-leash: Head to Cessnock or Maitland for designated off-leash parks
  • Nearest vet to Pokolbin: Cessnock, approximately 15 minutes drive
  • Golden rule: Always call ahead — policies can change, and a quick call guarantees a warm welcome
